Fast Food Is A Type Of Meal - 1892 Words
Fast food is a type of meal that is usually prepared and served very fast. The term first fast food was used for the first time in the 1950s in United States. Although any food that is prepared slowly can be called a fast food, this term is mostly used to describe food that is sold in restaurants or food stores that had precooking ingredients. Such as ingredients are usually prepared, packaged, and sold to customers as ââ¬Å"take-awayâ⬠products. Fast food outlets can include food booth or stands that do not have any shelter or seating spaces. Also, They can include fast food restaurants that have shelters, seating spaces and services offered through drive-through (Mushtaq 2). The fast food industry, which started as a business with few fastâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to The Heart Links Project (1), popular terms such as Burger King as well as the Big Mac burgers has become the most popular terms for defining foods in typical contemporary society diet. One of the m ost attractive characteristics of fast food is that it make eating more convenient as food can easily to get and eaten within a short period of time. This is because people do not need to travel for long distances to find fast food outlets as they can easily be found at any location within the market place, which makes it convenient to obtain a meal. The availability of fast food outlets has led to reduced fast food prices as individuals end up spending a small amount of money to get different types of fast food products. This is different from the traditional food preparation process, which take a lot of time, energy and resources to prepare a meal. Similarly, consumers, particularly students and working individuals do not have enough time to prepare food at home, which explains why they choose to go for fast food (Brindal 7). Despite these attractive characteristics, rapid availability of fast food is increasingly being linked to a major decline in healthy food choices. With milli ons of low-income populations relying on many several types of fast foods that are readily available in the neighborhoods, people have increasingly lacked

Spirits and Abraham Lincoln Letters to President...
In the late nineteenth century, American spiritualists maintained that Abraham Lincoln had been a spiritualist too. Whenever they drew up lists of prominent believers, Lincoln was foremost among the reformers, judges, governors, senators, and scientists whose stature lent credence to their movement. In this paper, I look at letters written to President Lincoln by spiritualists or about spiritualism, but it is not my aim to determine whether or not Lincoln was a spiritualist. Instead, I use these letters to reflect on spiritualism as a cultural phenomena. It captured the imaginations of many Americans in the years leading up to the Civil War, drawing them to sà ©ance rooms, to mediums, or to their family parlors to communeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I have drawn upon these ten letters, along with others by the same author or on related topics, for a total of about twenty letters. The earliest letters to Lincoln concerning spiritualism warn him of danger. An anonymous writer, one G. Self Healing Concrete Construction Industry
Question: Discuss about the Self Healing Concretefor Construction Industry. Answer: Introduction The topic of self-healing concrete is an innovation in the field of concrete structures that are mostly used in the construction industry. It can be said that the self-healing concrete is responsible for solving many issues in the construction industry in the perspective of the construction of the structure of the bridges to the foundation of the buildings. Traditional concrete has many flaws regarding to crack that will subject to tension. There are different healing mechanisms of concrete can heal small cracks by its autogenously healing capacity. However, it can be said that with the use of modern technology the standards of construction has reached to a new level. The innovation of self-healing concrete has helped in increasing the life of the buildings in terms of leaks, bending and cracks. The purpose statement of the innovation is the effective utilization of the innovation concept in the construction industry by the engineers with effective utilization of technology. Function of Innovation The function of innovation of self-healing concrete is based on using bacteria to extend the life of the constructions of different architectures. The material is also known as bio-concrete which can self-heal. The bacteria that are used in the cement mixture are either Sporosarcina pasteurii or Bacillus pseudofirmus. It is found that these bacteria can sustain for a long time without food and oxygen. These bacteria can stagger up to 200 years. They becomes dormant at this stage and with the contact of water they use calcium lactate for their food in order to produce limestone that closes the cracks (Van Stappen et al., 2016). Advantage of Innovation There are many advantages of the innovation of the self-healing concrete in the construction industry. They are described in the following: This formula is a scientifically explainable, well known healing process of small cracks in the concrete. Ample amount of knowledge and concepts of the on the agents using the different types of mechanisms of the self-healing concrete through different literatures should be gained. It is considered as a better control cement and self-healing concrete that is working as a compatible healing agent (Van Belleghem et al., 2016). The costs of the elements are relevantly less than different types of epoxy-based agents. The most important advantage of the innovation of self-healing concrete is the longer lifespan of the various structures and buildings along with minimized repairing of the concrete. The healing capacity of the concrete and the recovery system of the mechanical properties of the concrete are very high (Zhang et al., 2016). The aspect of multiple healing can be done using the concrete in the same site that is being damaged. The self-healing concrete will help in self-repairing of the cracks without any types of external aide. Flexural strength as well as compressive strength increases significantly when compared to normal concrete. The concrete has a resistance towards various freeze thaw attacks. The self-healing concrete has the power of reduction in the permeability of concrete. The reduction in the corrosion of the steel that has been occurring due to formation of cracks eventually improves the durability of the steel that reinforced the concrete. The most important aspect of using the Bacillus bacteria is that they do not cause any harm to the human life. Hence, it can be used effectively and efficiently (Zhu et al., 2015). Drawbacks of the Innovation Apart from having many advantages of self-healing concrete, there are many drawbacks of this innovation faced by the users of this concrete in the practical field of work. However, it can be said that the main disadvantage of using this process in the concrete. The disadvantages of the innovation of self-healing concrete are discussed below. The main aspect of disadvantage of bacterial self-healing concrete is the cost. It is pointed out that the cost of the bacterial concrete is almost double than the conventional concrete. The growth of the bacteria used in the self-healing concrete does not thrive well in all types of atmosphere and in any types of media. Therefore, the process of healing of the cracks in different temperatures varies (Tang, Kardani Cui, 2015). The clay pallet that holds the self-healing agent of the concrete sometimes is considered as a fault zone or shear zone in the cement mix. However, it can be said that the clay pellets consists of almost 20% in the volume of the concrete. The clay is very much weaker than the normal concrete. Hence, the strength of the cement gets reduced in terms of compressive strength (Silva et al., 2016). The percentage of clay can be a problem to the construction of high rise buildings as these buildings requires high compressive strength concrete. The design of the concrete mix with the different forms of bacteria is not available in all parts of the world. The process of investigation of the calcite precipitate is very much costly. The installation of a vascular network system is very difficult while casting concrete. In passive vascular network, sometimes the healing agent is released in an inefficient manner. Loss of mechanical properties in the concrete is possible (Van Belleghem et al., 2016). Conclusion and Recommendations The above study focuses on the different aspects of the innovation of self-healing concrete in the society. The function of the innovation in the society works has a vast impact in the construction industry. However, there are also many drawbacks in the implementation of the process in the practical scenario. The mechanisms of implementing the concept of self-healing concrete by the engineers of the construction industry are described in details. Based on the drawbacks of the innovation of the self-healing concrete, the recommendations are provided so that the concrete mix can be used and widely available in different parts of the world. The cost of the concrete must be reduced so that it can be availed by most of the builders. Secondly, technologies are to be used so that the percentage of clay can be reduced while increasing the compressive strength of the cement. Innovations are to be done in the proper utilization of the bacteria in the concrete mix at all types of temperatures so that the effectiveness remains the same (Dong et al., 2014). The Man Ltd became the Good Ltd.s wholly owned subsidiary from the acquisition date. Consolidated statements along with statements of subsidiaries are essential for true and fair presentation of financial statements to the public. Accordingly, the Good Ltd is accountable to showcase the consolidated financial statement along with those of Man Ltd. Many entries are removed in the financial statements since they are useless because transaction lies with subsidiary company. Consolidation: It describes the procedure for combining and showing both subsidiary and parent companys financial statements as though a single firm. It makes users to clearly analyze and comprehend the position of company financially. They can also analyze companys investment based on financial position along with capabilities. Thus providing returns and benefits of subsidiary to parent one. Consolidated Income Statement It represents and reports parent companys expenses and incomes alongside those of subsidiary. It becomes inflated and bulky because of items combination. It allows investors to gauge the companys true performance, investments and interest. Income and expenses items are eliminated from it where an income of an entity is anothers expense. Consolidated Balance Sheet It denotes and reports companys position financially besides subsidiaries. It helps users to comprehend companys collective standings. Certain receivables and payables items are excluded as inter dues. Consolidation Aspect Goodwill It is intangible asset acknowledged solely at purchase event and generates revenues in future. It is unaccounted for in books of account because of self-development. It is impaired from accounts where evidence for further incomes is lacking. When recognized, its impairment charge produces partial income generated if it were impaired fully. IAS disallows impairment loss reversals recognized linked to goodwill. Good Ltd.s Board of Directors lacks power to revalue already completely impaired acquired goodwill upwards by 100,000 dollars. Good Ltd.s management errored in opinion and move to surge goodwill on Man Ltd returned to profitability fast completely unanticipated. Goodwill recognized solely when purchased. It becomes additional amount paid as purchase consideration of net asset value. Where purchase consideration is less relative to net assets, same will be recognized as capital reserve. Control in Accounting Environment: Accounting is essential for business. Business operations depend on companys business model. Companies financial are business blood. Gender Roles Family Structure Changes free essay sample
Today, people realize and see that there is not the same consensus of family dynamics and lifestyles that the 1950s demonstrated when the family life and gender roles became much more predictable (Coontz 36). An analysis of Stephanie Coontzs, What We Really Miss About the 1950s, along with the episodes of Leave It To Beaver, have revealed certain roles and structure of a quintessential family that clearly exhibits the definite changes in family dynamics today. Throughout Stephanie Coontzs essay, she emphasizes her idea of family structures in many situations. She argues that shows such as Leave It to Beaver were not the way families really were [â⬠¦] people watched them to see how families were supposed to live and also to get a little reassurance that they were headed in the right direction (38). Here, readers should realize that these sitcoms that were watched were advertisements to families in a way to demonstrate the American Dream. We will write a custom essay sample on Gender Roles Family Structure Changes or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For example these episodes served as a guide to how to raise their children, organize their marriage, and have the perfect family structure. Today, we hardly ever see any television shows demonstrating these types of problems. We typically see more of reality television shows broadcasting the ideas of being the perfect individual, rather than a perfect family through celebrities and figures we praise and look up to. Also, television shows like Family Guy, portray the opposite of family structures in the 1950s, revealing more of a un-idyllic household including disrespectful children and irresponsible parents. In contrast to Family Guy, several episodes of Leave It To Beaver demonstrated a 1950s family structure that society looked upon. In the episode The Perfect Father, Ward Cleaver comes into the living room explaining to his children, you dont want to leave all of these newspapers on the ground for your mother to pick up (Leave It To Beaver). In this scene, a viewer can infer that since Ward works hard during the day, the role of June Cleaver as a woman is to clean up after every single mess the family makes in the household. Along with this, June appears in every scene with some type of a domestic sphere. For example, she is constantly in the kitchen either cooking or cleaning for her family. Even if she leaves the household, she continues her gender role of being a mother/woman by going grocery shopping for her husband and children. In society today, there are plenty mothers that keep up with their gender role from the 1950s, along with men too. We constantly see fathers taking care of their families as well; cleaning, cooking, and going grocery shopping. Also, women today work full time to take responsibility in the family, not just men. Its a part of parenting nowadays to take care of ones family even if it means doing domestic activities. It is important in society today to work together as parents, on taking that role of putting your children first. Coontz periodically talks about family structure in her essay about how very few young people spent any extended period of time in a nonfamily setting: They moved from their parents family into their own family, after just a brief experience with independent living, and they started having children soon after marriage (Coontz 36). It seems that in the 1950s, people wanted to start their families at an early age; they were quick to build that ideal family lifestyle and structure. Through the lens of the 1950s society, it was essential to form a perfect family, and starting at and early age would give you more time to successfully fulfill that dream. Young Americans today do not rush into having a family because most put their education and career first. They stay at their parents care, living at their house as long as possible, to successfully earn an education and start their career. Once they have started their career, that is when the individual settles down, gets married, and starts a family. A lot of people in society today know that it is key to be financially stable to start a family, so that way there are no struggles. People in the 1950s clearly thought that making the decision to begin a family at a young age was not looked down upon because families are what made them happy, money was not an issue. It is clear that certain gender roles and family structure has changed throughout the years, especially since the 1950s, throughout the analysis of Stephanie Coontzs, What We Really Miss About the 1950s and episodes of Leave It To Beaver. As a scholar, I see the differences in family dynamics in several ways. Certain gender roles have changed, but are still there. For example, in the episode The Perfect Father, Ward tries his hardest to compete with Mr. Dennison in who is the better father when he realizes his children are spending more time at his house (Leave It To Beaver). In todays society, we see fathers always competing with other fathers in everything that they do; wether it is sports, the working world, or with their children. Although some of these gender role changes are not meant to be a bad thing, it is important to see that it takes the effort of two to create a respectful, perfect family structure. Maybe even someday in the near future, women and men will not be defined by their gender, but sometimes it is necessary for a mother to take on domestic roles, and a father to take on masculine roles. What people do not really understand is the meaning of family: no matter what roles the mother or father take on, how early a couple decides to start a family, how many children a married couple decides to have, or where to live its about family love and the happiness it brings.

American economics history exam - Assignment Example The action of Federal Reserve to raise interest rates hoping to slow the rapid rise in stock prices depressed interest-sensitive spending in institutions such as automobile purchases and construction. In addition, it resulted to the crash of the stock market, thus reducing the American aggregate demand substantially. The U.S. government has centralized great power and responsibility in one institution, which is the Federal Reserve in making significant decisions in relation to the economy. The significance of having a well-defined and secure property rights as it gives people the exclusive right of using their resources as they see fit (James 16). The fact that individuals are the dominion of their property, they take full account of the entire costs and benefits of employing those resources in a specific manner. The process in which they weigh costs and benefits produces efficient outcomes; therefore, translating into more prominent standards of living. However, in the last decades, during the history of modern economics, economists did not see the importance of property rights. Property rights impact the efficiency of resource allocation whereby the limit expropriation and facilitate market transactions. Moreover, they enhance investment incentives by limiting expropriation risk and reducing motive of diverting private resources in order to protect property. For an instant in U.S., the government has developed policies that protect the individualsââ¬â¢ property r ights in order for these individuals to trade in assets and improve collateralization of those assets. In the American history, between 1870ââ¬â¢s to 1930ââ¬â¢s, there were battles on business property because the judiciary saw that it was necessary to protect the general welfare (James 17). The problems with the Articles of Confederation were that the Articles were not precisely accurate or exact in an absolute sense. It is in the sense that when the Articles are viewed in a

Crittaclly Describe and Analyse the world Top Ten Airports of the Essay
Crittaclly Describe and Analyse the world Top Ten Airports of the Civil Aviation Industry - Essay Example The airport was once the largest airport in America before Atlanta airport took over the first place. The Oââ¬â¢Hare International Airport has four terminals with a combined number of an astounding 182 gates. The airport runs over 50 different airlines and has a positive feedback from its customers. This is indeed one the largest and the oldest airports of human history. The airport was created in 1923 and in 1949 it was named Chicago Midway airport from its previous name of Chicago Municipal airport. This is the second largest airport in the Chicago areas and the second busiest in the state of Illinois after Chicagoââ¬â¢s OHare International Airport. The number of travelers that passed through Midway was 17,340,497 in2008. The airport is the 30th busiest airport in the Unites States. The airport has an over eighty years of top quality service, with only 21 accidents. The last tragedy took place almost thirty four years ago in 1976. The airport has 43 gates in total. Southwest airline is still their dominant service which controls 28 of these 43 gates. The two main players in the Chicago IL area are as mentioned Midway and Oââ¬â¢Hare. According to the financial statements issued by Chicago city airport system, Oââ¬â¢Hare saw 75 million customers and Midway as many as 19 million customers. If we analyze the market share in terms of customer base than we can say that the market share of Oââ¬â¢Hare is almost 79%. There are a many other smaller airports in the area with negligible market share. The industry is owned and run by the city council. The mayor of Chicago is the person in charge and has delegated operational authority to John A. Roberson who is the Commissioner in Chicagoââ¬â¢s Department of Aviation. The airport has two types of customers. The primary customers are the travelers. They use the facilities being provided by Chicago IL airport system such as restaurants, lodging and restrooms. The main

Cars Type Research Proposal Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Cars Type - Research Proposal Example A hybrid car typically provides a higher mileage at lower emission rates and lower gas consumption as compared to the traditionally powered gasoline cars. A typical hybrid car with a combination of electricity and gasoline provide these benefits to the users by combining the set up of these two systems to provide necessary leverage in gasoline consumption and electric power. A traditional hybrid cars works on the principal of hybrid technology which combines the use of traditional locomotive engines which are run by the two different sources of fuel. Most of them work either on Gasoline plus electricity or Diesel plus some other source of fuel and can use nuclear power also. Therefore any vehicle that can combines two or more sources of propulsion are considered as hybrid vehicles. Most of the cars which are now commonly used are hybrid in nature as they use either diesel and electricity or gasoline and electricity as two mutual sources of propulsion. A typical gas powered car carries a fuel tank which is a chief source of providing gasoline to the engine which in turn provides engine the ability to transmit which actually move the wheels of the car whereas compared to the gas powered hybrid car, the electric powered hybrid car which has a set of batteries which provide the power to the engine to run. The normal structure of a gasoline-electricity powered car include a gasoline engine, a fuel tank, electric motor which also acts as a generator in advanced models, a generator to produce electric power, a set of batteries which are used to store electric power, and transmission mechanism which is basically used to perform basic transmission functions like in traditional cars besides providing a radically different mechanism in car models like in Toyota Pirus. (Layton and Nice). Traditionally, the power in the electric-gasoline car can be combined in two ways. One is called Parallel Hybrid in which the gas tank provides fuel to the engine

Physics of Road Safety
Physics of Road Safety In our modern world of today we slowly innovate more and more. However as we innovate we forget to advance and improve on our current inventions. One of these inventions is the automobile. One of the current problems facing the automobile is its safety on the road. With more people using automobiles, we should focus on solving these problems before looking towards the future of transportation. I will be discussing the factors which influence the road safety of automobiles. Road safety is preventing the death or injury of people using the road. [1] Most deaths and injuries happen in road accidents, and to prevent these from happening, we must change the friction and texture of the road and adjust the tires so itââ¬â¢s compatible with the road. But for there to be a change to the roads construction will need to be done and some parts will not be new so setting up clear hazard signs may help prevent traffic accidents while improving road safety. The Road The Roads today around the world consist of asphalt, concrete, gravel and chip seal. All these types have factors that influence the friction with the car and itââ¬â¢s ability to slow down or speed up. Weââ¬â¢ll be looking first at gravel roads which are mostly set up in rural areas where not much traffic occurs. Because of the type of texture gravel contains. That being a form of stones. Cars will end up creating the road more bumpy and will shift and move the small rocks around due to there being minimal friction between the surface and the road. When the wheels of the car rotate around they shift the gravel as well creating potholes in the road. These make it unsafe to drive at fairly high speeds since the car can be thrown off balance if it encounters these potholes. In addition since most gravel roads are not connected and the road is made of loose gravel, the gravel can fly around and potentially damage parts of the car or even the tyres. [2] During rainy days these gravel roads become muddy and problematic to drive through. Strong control over the steering wheel will be be required as one would need to be watch out for eroded areas on the road and drainage ditches for lar ger cars, as they face the problem of potentially overturning due to their high centre of gravity. [2] To prevent the likelihood of these accidents happening Hazard signs telling one to look out at the road will have to be set up to alert drivers that they could encounter such problems if they pass through here, if improvement of the road is not possible. The asphalt roads are much better than the gravel roads. They are not crushed rocks laid out on a road but a chemical mixture that has a smooth surface. Asphalt is mostly laid out on gravel roads to improve its durability. The bitumen allows the asphalt to endure significant plastic deformation. [12] Because of the asphalt being so compact it is unable to erode as easily as gravel and will suffer minimal fatigue from heavy cars passing on it. This will make driving more comfortable and safer than driving on a gravel road. Another type of Asphalt is Chip seal. This is used for pavements and streets in rural and minor traffic areas. Chip seal is made from combining layers of asphalt with aggregate. [4] Chip seal roads arenââ¬â¢t particularly safe to drive on at fast speeds. Because of the crushed stone that may be sometimes left behind while applying the chipseal on the road they can chip of the paint on some cars and cause loss of control for smaller vehicles. [4] Concrete is considerably popular in most countries around the world and is what most are made of nowadays. Concrete is made from mixing cement, sand and water. Concrete can sometimes have a smooth surface depending with what itââ¬â¢s mixed with. Compared to asphalt, concrete is resistant to weather conditions, lasts longer but doesnââ¬â¢t provide better traction. The Tyre There are different types of tyres but they all require traction to be able to move, stop and turn on the road. There is Dry Traction and Wet Traction. Tyres have different tread patterns that suit for better traction on dry or wet surfaces. [5] Adjusting tread patterns to increase the traction to the surface of a road may also increase in reducing the braking distance and increase road safety. By using only one type of road it will be easier to produce more tyres that have a strong traction to that specific road and the only worry would be whether the traction is suitable for dry or wet surfaces. This can easily be determined by the climate and condition of some parts of a road (floodable or not) and when the time comes the tyres can be changed to provide traction on wet surfaces. Braking Distance The most popular and common roads are concrete so weââ¬â¢ll use that as the road for our solution. Concrete roads donââ¬â¢t provide much traction due to their smooth surface however they are resistant to weather conditions and last longer so we wonââ¬â¢t have to worry much apart from the tyres. Since the road isnââ¬â¢t affected by the weather we can expect that there wonââ¬â¢t be completely wet surface unless flooded. So we can focus on having our tyres maintain a dry traction to the surface although this may vary for different countries which have different climates. Most common tyres are ones with symmetrical tread patterns but weââ¬â¢ll be using asymmetrical tread patterns as these benefit us more since it offers greater contact area giving us more stability on a dry surface which is want we want on a concrete road. [7] [8] Since we know what tyre and road we will be using we can now calculate the braking distance this will give us. The formula we have for Kinetic Energy is . [11] m being the mass of the car and v being the velocity at the start of breaking. The average mass of a car is 1500 kg and in this case our velocity is going to 5ms/s. [5] Our equation should then look something like this Then leaving us with and finally . But to find the braking distance we need to find the Work done by the force of the break to give us an equation for the distance. The formulae for Work done is . [11] being the coefficient of friction while m is the mass of the car, g is the gravity of the earth and d is the stopping distance. But to solve this equation we need to figure out the stopping distance. The formula for the stopping distance is . [11] If we substitute our numbers then we end up with . For this equation is the coefficient of friction for concrete. [10] If we substitute this in for our second formulae then we will end up with which will be but the answer we get is not equal because So this means that the car will not come to a complete halt after braking for 1.59 metres. However the car will come to a complete stop after 1.6 metres because the since which would mean that the car will come to a halt between 10 cm after the car has passed 1.59 metres while braking. The Impacts Impacts of Implementing this solution into society will be a huge change and may need to involve a large amount of investment in the construction project. This may benefit the local economy by providing more jobs to people but the cost of the project may be to overwhelming for a single country to pay on itââ¬â¢s own and will have to borrow money from other countries. This may cause the country to go into debt despite partially benefitting the local economy. Even though tyre manufacturers can now start producing 1 type of tyre (depending on where they are manufacturing to( can easily be invested in and demands of their product will cause a rise in the economy. For the locals creating a huge construction project that will make roads unusable until they are finished constructing may be a bother and people will not be willing to have their roads unusable if they are a car user and want use their car to travel around. This may spark protests and can escalate into violent riots since the reactions of people may vary from country to country depending on their situations. Politicians may use this solution to convince and win the favour of the people by granting them safer roads and cars. This may influence peoples votes but creation requires destruction and our environment could be damaged by the large scale construction project and cause animals to lose their habitat since they need to first gather the resources to make concrete, use the energy required to make concrete, and finally lay out the concrete all of these may be done by non environmentally friendly machines which cause damage to itââ¬â¢s surroundings through different means (eg. pollution). Conclusion To be able to reduce all the negative impacts of the solution we came up with we can limit the use to only when a country decides to construct / repair a road and when manufacturers create new cars. To make the impact even smaller and more environmentally friendly we can only allow the use of our solution in major cities of a country and not on every road although this will limit our general goal of our solution. But it will increase your safety on the road. Bibliography [1](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_traffic_safety). Colonialism and Imperialism - The White Male and the Other in Heart of
The European, White Male vs. the Other in Heart of Darkness à à à The novella Heart of Darkness has, since it's publication in 1899, caused much controversy and invited much criticism. While some have hailed it's author, Joseph Conrad as producing a work ahead of it's time in it's treatment and criticism of colonialist practices in the Congo, others, most notably Chinua Achebe, have criticized it for it's racist and sexist construction of cultural identity. Heart of Darkness can therefore be described as a text of it's time, as the cultural identity of the dominant society, that is, the European male is constructed in opposition to "the other", "the other" in Heart of Darkness being defined as black and/or female. Notions of cultural identity are largely constructed through language and setting and are essential to the reader's understanding of the text. à à While many characters are critiqued or criticized by Conrad for their exploitation of Africa and it's inhabitants, they remain the dominant and superior race, both according to Conrad, and his primary narrator Charlie Marlow. The African characters are not only constructed as "other", but also as inferior and to an extent subhuman. This is evident through their lack of language or voice throughout the text. Africans are denied language, and are instead granted "grunting" noises and a "violent babble of mouth sounds" relegating them to an inferior status. à à Only on two occasions are the natives given language and expression by the author. Firstly, when cannibalism is seen to overcome them, and one of then when asked what they will do with the body of one of the dead crew, replies "Eat 'im". The second occasion is when the enigmatic figure of Kurtz... ...constructing women as the "other", not being able to cope with the truth and facts of life, Conrad asserts the superiority and dominance of the white male. à à In Heart of Darkness, cultural identity and the dominance of the European, white male is constructed and asserted through the constructions of the "other", that is the African natives and females, largely through language and setting. Thus, while claims of Conrad's forwardness in producing a text that critiques colonialism may be valid, Heart of Darkness is ultimately a product of it's time and therefore confirms the contextual notions of difference. à à à Bibliography à Conrad, J. MacBeth versions comparison essay Essay
There are many differences between interpretations of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s MacBeth. This essay wall contrast Shakespeareââ¬â¢s original version and a movie version by Roman Polanski produced in 1970. Three major differences will be discussed. One difference between Shakespeareââ¬â¢s and Polanskiââ¬â¢s version is the absence of the scene in England in Polanskiââ¬â¢s version. In the Original MacBeth, MacDuff goes to England to convince Malcolm to return and fight MacBeth. The scene of the longest of the play; it is very drawn out and lengthy. Polanski simply eliminates this scene and shows Malcolm back in Scotland. The reason I feel that Polanski did this is that the scene detracts from the continuity and action of the play. The play is equally effective without the scene, and more streamlined. Another difference between the original and Polanskiââ¬â¢s version is the scene where MacBeth kills the king, Duncan. In the original, Shakespeare was not allowed to show the death of a divine right ruler, so he showed MacBeth coming out of the kingââ¬â¢s bedchamber after he had committed the murder. For Polanskiââ¬â¢s version, however, he had no such limitation, and could show anything that he chose, so he showed the actual murder of Duncan, where Duncan wakes up, and MacBeth cuts his throat after stabbing him. The reason that Polanski inserted this scene was to show how cold-blooded MacBeth was, and that he would do anything to achieve his goal of becoming king. A third difference is the use of the letter that MacBeth writes to his wife describing how he has become Thane of Cawdor and the witchesââ¬â¢ three predictions. In the original, the letter was read by Lady MacBeth, and then not mentioned again. In Polanskiââ¬â¢s version, Lady MacBeth takes out the letter after everything with her and her husbandââ¬â¢s plan has gone wrong, reads it, and then kills herself. The reason that Polanski did this is that the letter is a useful device to cause Lady MacBeth to kill herself. She reads the letter, and itââ¬â¢s all this happy news, but she and MacBeth are miserable, and all the good things in the letter have gone awry. There are scenes also in Polanskiââ¬â¢s version which are not even included in the original. One of these such scenes would be the scene where the traitors from the war are being executed. They are brutally hung with cast iron brackets on their neck. This scene is very successful in showing the brutal treatment of traitors, the treatment that MacBeth would get if he was caught in his plan. The original did not do such a good job on this. Another of these such scenes would be the dreams that MacBeth has about Fleance killing him and Banquo helping him. Due to the extreme lack of technology in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time, this was not possible. The dreams sequence serves to show how haunted MacBethââ¬â¢s dreams are, and how worried he is about losing the throne to Fleance because of the witchesââ¬â¢ predictions. There are many differences between these two version of MacBeth, and each of them, I believe, serves itââ¬â¢s own purpose to enhance and better the play.

Hoosiers a Film Review Essay Example
Hoosiers a Film Review Essay Example Hoosiers a Film Review Paper Hoosiers a Film Review Paper HOOSIERS A film review Hoosiers is a film about second chances. Redemption is given to a short tempered coach, who was issued a lifetime suspension by the NCAA for physically assaulting a player, and a former star player- turned town drunk. These two defeat their odds by taking a small town high school basketball team from being just 15 and 10, all the way to the state championship. In my review, Iââ¬â¢ll attempt to explain how this coach matches up against Kouzes and Posnerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. â⬠Our setting is rural Indiana in a town called Hickory. Itââ¬â¢s a place thatââ¬â¢s resistant to change. Hickory is a place where, according to Myra Fleener, a character in the film, ââ¬Å"basketball heroes are treated like godsâ⬠. This town takes their basketball seriously, a setting where the new basketball coach faces the obstacle of sleuth of second-guessing fathers. Norman Dale is the main character, the volatile coach who has spent the last ten years serving in the Navy after being let go from his position from Ithaca College. Shooter is the town drunk, father of one of the players, whom Norman gives a shot at sobriety by letting him be his assistant as long as he can remain clean. Another main character is Miss Fleener, another one of Coach Daleââ¬â¢s obstacles. She is a feisty teacher, a firm believer that there is more to life than basketball and the one who tries to keep the star player, Jimmy, from rejoining the team after he quit playing because of his previous coachââ¬â¢s death. The leadership issue presented in the film is the lack of belief in the leader-that he can accomplish better than what has already taken place. In the beginning, the only person who thought much of Coach Dale was the man who hired him, Principal Cletus. Norman didnââ¬â¢t receive a warm welcome nor have the trust of the fathers of the sons on the team, the town, or the team itself. Coach Dale had to earn the trust and respect in order to lead the group of undisciplined individuals he was dealt. According to their first practice of exemplary leadership, ââ¬Å"Model the Wayâ⬠, Kouzes and Posner say that to effectively model the behavior they expect of other, leaders must first be clear about guiding principles. They must clarify values. Norman Dale valued teamwork. He believed that no player was more important than the other and he expressed this during practice and showed it by changing the way the Hickory Huskers practiced. Unlike the town who wanted to get their star player back and keep the basketball in his hands and not confuse the boys by changing their routine, the new coach wanted to break these barriers. He ââ¬Å"modeled the wayâ⬠by sticking to his values and ignoring the pestering from the fathers and other townsfolk who invited themselves to practice and by kick out players who did not want to listen during practice. Leaders gaze across the horizon of time, imagining the attractive opportunities that are in store when they and their constituents arrive at a destination. They envision exciting and ennobling possibilities. The Leadership Challenge, pg. 17. Inspiring a Shared Vision comes second on Kouzes and Posnerââ¬â¢s list. Coach Dale had obtained previous success and knew he could make the Hucksters better. His vision was to go back to the fundamentals of basketball and playing better defense was part of it. Norman wasnââ¬â¢t about scrimmage or a whole lot of shooting during practice. His vision involved passing the ball no less than four times before taking a shot. This enabled his strong value of teamwork to take place. He tried to inspire others to share in this vision by constantly asking his players before games ââ¬Å"How many times do we pass before we shoot? â⬠which they would all shout back ââ¬Å"4â⬠. At first, Coach Dale had to demand respect. During their first game of the season, a couple of the players felt the coachââ¬â¢s approach wasnââ¬â¢t working and decided to take the game in their own direction. In the locker room afterwards, coach threatens that any player that wants to stay on the team can stay under one condition, that what he says is law. Dale thought the best way to inspire a shared vision was to break his players down and build them back up. Eventually, his players believed when they realized that perfecting this concept helped them tremendously. Norman even inspired Jimmy to not only come back and play but to stick up for him at the town meeting where a vote occurred to remove him from his position. Coach Dale, I would say, definitely ââ¬Å"Challenged the Processâ⬠which is another of the practices of exemplary leadership. ââ¬Å"Luckâ⬠or ââ¬Å"being in the right place at the right timeâ⬠may play a role in the specific opportunities leaders embrace, but those who lead others to greatness seek and accept challenge. The Leadership Challenge, pg. 18. Coach Dale put in place the changes he wanted to despite what others thought or the process that had given his predecessor success. He didnââ¬â¢t care if the star player came back to the team or not. He challenged what everyone else thought was best for his team. To get extraordinary things done in organizations, leaders have to enable others to act. The Leadership Challenge, pg. 20. Letââ¬â¢s see, Shooter was able to stay sober for awhile because of what Norman had asked of him. In one of their games, Coach Dale purposely got himself ejected so that Shooter could stand in and lead the team the rest of the way to victory. Coach also allowed Ollie, the team manager who thought he was too short and not good enough, to remain more a part of the team than just its equipment manager. Through his ways of practicing and the courage and motivation he gave to his players, he enables them to play to the best of their abilities and achieve something that was never done before ââ¬â such a small school winning the state title. In the film the character, Coach Dale, in my opinion, was able to practice the last of Kouzes and Posnerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"five practicesâ⬠. Getting Ollie to find in him the ability to make the game winning shots in the semi-final tells me that he ââ¬Å"encouraged the heartâ⬠. When Jimmy decides to play for Coach Dale, Iââ¬â¢d say that helped the coach carry on. When Shooter fails at staying clean, Norman Dale doesnââ¬â¢t give up on him and actually encourages him to get the help he really needs. The Hickory Huskers played with a lot of heart due to the love Norman Dale expressed to them. He gets Shooterââ¬â¢s son to play through the embarrassment Shooter has caused and encourages his heart to forgive him. In conclusion, I think the coach matched up pretty well against Kouzes and Posnerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. He was able to overcome the leadership isssues presented in the film. The movie was a second chance. Norman Dale was able to fix his past mistakes and carry out his vision. If I were to really pick him apart though, Iââ¬â¢d have to say that getting himself ejected from games maybe doesnââ¬â¢t model discipline to the people under him. Overall, he was a good leader, winning over a town and even theâ⬠hard to get love interestâ⬠, the feisty Myra Fleener. Sources: The Leadership Challenge 4th Edition, J. M. Kouzes B. Z. A Guide to Conjugating Battre (to Beat)
A Guide to Conjugating Battre (to Beat) The French word battre means to beat. (The reflexive se battre means to fight, as does the verb combattre.) It is an irregular -re verb, meaning youll have to memorize the conjugations, rather than rely knowing on the regular -re conjugation pattern. How to Conjugate the French Verb Battre You can start as you would when conjugating a regular -re verb and determine the stem by dropping the -re (batt-). Heres where things deviate from a regular verb: In the present tense, the singular forms also drop the second t. These charts show you how to conjugate this irregular verb. (Other verbs that include battre, likeà abattre, combattreà and dà ©battre, also follow this irregular pattern.) Present Future Imperfect Present Participle je bats battrai battais battant tu bats battras battais il bat battra battait nous battons battrons battions vous battez battrez battiez ils battent battront battaient Subjunctive Conditional Pass simple Imperfect subjunctive je batte battrais battis battisse tu battes battrais battis battisses il batte battrait battit battt nous battions battrions battmes battissons vous battiez battriez batttes battissiez ils battent battraient battirent battissent à à Imperative(tu)bats(nous)battons(vous)battez How to Useà Battreà in the Past Tense Though this is a lesson about simple conjugation, its important to touch on the compound tense passà © composà ©, as it is the most common way to put something in the past tense in French. For battre, the auxiliary verb is avoir and the past participle is battu. For example: Il a battu les oeufs avec une fourchette. He beat the eggs with a fork.

Hygiene Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Hygiene - Essay Example Hygiene simply refers to a science that deals with the preservation of health. Hygiene can also be identified as a set of practices that are associated with, or help in the preservation of health. Hygiene recommendations and requirements will vary under different situations both in society and in the medical field. This is because the perception of hygiene among different ethnic groups or cultures may vary and also the hygiene recommendations in a particular field of medicine may vary from those in a different field. The main reason why hygiene is emphasized on in the medical field is because it reduces the risk of spreading diseases. It controls the multiplication and spread of organisms that cause diseases in everyday life settings. There are different types of hygiene that are essential in the preservation of health, for example, hand hygiene. This is the most common societal form of hygiene. It is also referred to as hand washing and health experts recommend the washing of hands with a hand sanitizer such as soap. Hand hygiene is essential in preventing the spread of diseases in everyday life because the hands come in to contact with many things, such as unclean surfaces, and for this reason, it so happens that hands are more prone to transferring bacteria that will cause diseases. Other forms of hygiene may include food hygiene, laundry hygiene, and personal hygiene among many others. In the field of medicine, hygiene is summed up in to medical hygiene. This refers to the practices which regulate the administration of medicine and medical care. The main agenda of medical hygiene is to minimize the spread of diseases or even to prevent diseases from spreading. For example, if there is a patient who has been diagnosed or is showing symptoms of a particular infectious disease, then the prudent medical hygiene procedure that should be followed is isolation. The medical term used for isolation is quarantine. Hand hygiene is also pertinent to medical hygiene. Me dical practitioners are required to wash their hands before handling a patient. This requirement is emphasized more when one is about to enter an operating room but the role that hand hygiene plays in the general hospital or health care setting cannot be overlooked because some bacteria that spread diseases are easily transmittable. In the 20th century, an outbreak of a number of highly infectious and deadly diseases was experienced. One such disease was Ebola. The rate of transmission of these viruses necessitated the tightening of medical hygiene and since then, such practices as proper disposal of medical waste is a key element in medical hygiene. The Role of Hygiene in Adult Nursing Adult nursing is the field of nursing which deals with and cares for adult patients who are suffering from acute and long term illnesses and diseases (Baughan & Smith, 2009). An adult nurseââ¬â¢s primary duty is to support the patient in their recovery process. This kind of support is offered by t he use of care plans, and by carrying out care procedures and assessment. Apart from this, the adult nurse should educate the patient on how they can promote good health. This is where hygiene comes in. Hygiene is important in adult nursing and any other kinds of medical practice because it also helps the patient to recover from the diseases or illnesses that they are suffering from (Bullock, Clark & Marlone, 2012, p. 344). It is evident that adults, especially those who are well advanced in age, have immune systems and bodies which are more prone to diseases. This is because the immune system weakens gradually as the body itself ages. When an adult patient is infected by disease causing bacteria, they are

Significance of Structure and the Role of Marketing in Organisation - Assignment Example Innumerable writers have demonstrated the significance of the organisational structure along with its relation with the organisationââ¬â¢s size, technology, culture and environment. A few writers have mentioned the fact that if an organisation wants to achieve high performance, its structure needs to fit and match with the degree of change in its environment. It has further been pointed out that the structure plays a vital role in all the aspects of the human capital of the organisation. The organisation structure and the underlying design principles need to match with the main purpose of the organisation. Else, the organisation is deemed to fail and might not succeed in the long run. Marketing can be considered as the heart of an organization. The significance of marketing is growing in the non-commercial, public as well as voluntary sectors. The demand for the goods and services of any particular organisation totally relies upon the needs and wants along with the ability to pay. It is significant for the marketers to take these factors into consideration if they want to sell the product that focuses to be successful in the long run. (University of London, n.d.). There have been controversies in the recent years regarding the role played by marketing in the competitive strategy. By unambiguous verbalisation of the marketing capabilities, the researchers are capable of arguing the fact that marketing contributes to the theory and practice. The new researches need to focus upon the tasks those require different capabilities of marketing since they contribute to innovative along with entrepreneurial firm behaviour (Weerawardena, 2003). It has been found that the mar keters are gaining awareness of the positive impact of marketing actions with social dimensions can have upon the organisation. It has been pinpointed by American Marketing Association members that social responsibility can be considered as a significant element for enhancing the effectiveness of the organisation (Handelman & Arnold, 1999). Marketing plays a significant role in the operations of the business. With the term marketing, it is understood as satisfaction of the wants and needs of the customers. Through product, place, price and promotion strategies, the operation of the business can reflect upon the contentment of the needs and wants of the customer. Marketing links the business and the customers together. It is the duty of the marketer to provide such goods that can be liked by the consumers and they wish to buy it at such a price which customers want to pay in a proper location. Furthermore, the goods must be promoted effectively for enhancing the level of awareness of the product to the customers (Learning Edege, n.d.). It is marketing that is responsible at generation of the revenues as well as profit of the organisation. In case of non-profit organisations, the marketing takes care of attracting the customers so that the mission of the non-profit organization can be achieved. Without

Should College Have One Attendance Policy Essay Example for Free
Should College Have One Attendance Policy Essay The college should have one attendance policy for all departments. Attendance policy is strange things, and perhaps the strangest thing about them is how often they completely differ from one another. There is no college ââ¬â wide attendance policy that students must follow, but many departments create their own. Some departments have strict attendance policies, but many times the policy is whatever the professor feels like. I think the college should adopt a more uniform attendance policy for several reasons. First of all, the lack of uniformity can be mind ââ¬â boggling for student. Attendance policy varies a lot between professors. Some professors donââ¬â¢t enforce these policies; many make up their own and put it in their syllabus. Itââ¬â¢s not uncommon for a gen-ed to have a strict attendance policy while an important course for studentââ¬â¢s major has a very lenient one. Itââ¬â¢s obviously more important that the student attend the major course, but he or she only faces consequences if the gen-ed is missed. Second of all, many department policies are not enforced by professors. This is worse than not having a policy in the first place. How are students supposed to take showing up to class seriously if their teachers donââ¬â¢t? Another reason, attendance policies do not do a good job of reflecting the importance of a class. Furthermore the inconsistent attitudes professors have towards them are confusing to student. Therefore, when faces with so many varying opinions on the importance or unimportance of attendance policies, students lose the basic point. However, every student should attend all classes. Not only are professor there to teach you in the first place, you paid to learn. Not going to class is essentially throwing money away while pretending to be a student. In short, attendance policy at college should be changed in order to be more consistent. Either do away with policies altogether and let the students face the long-term consequences of their actions, or find a policy every professor in the department will stand behind and enforce.

Human Resourse Management Essay -- GCSE Business Marketing Coursework
Human Resourse Management This essay will review the role of human resource management (HRM) in the strategy process. This will include the function of recruitment and training programs in HRM, the concept of strategic fit and how human resource management can lead to a competitive advantage. The manner in which an organisationââ¬â¢s personnel are managed has a tangible influence on the productivity of the employees, which ultimately acts upon the firmââ¬â¢s bottom line. Corporate success is dependent upon the integration of the human resource plan and the corporate strategic plan.It has become a widely held premise that people provide organisations with an important source of sustainable competitive advantage and that the effective management of human capital, not physical capital, may be the ultimate determinant of organisational performance (Youndt, Snell, Dean, Jr, & Lepak, 1996). The relationship between the strategic planning of an organisationââ¬â¢s people and the overall strategy is being increasingly recognised as one of immense importance. A growing recognition of human resources as being a companyââ¬â¢s most important asset has, and will continue to, change the focus of strategic planning. It is no longer acceptable to exclusively plan for those assets that will appear on the balance sheet. A cohesive plan integrating human resource management and the overall strategic plan is necessary, such that the management of people is not a distinct function, but acts as a medium through which all other business strategies are implemented (Armstrong and Long, 1994: p. 42). In essence, the competitive, human resource, and structural strategies should all be linked in a systemic and dynamic fashion (Boxall, 1996: p. 61). Unfortunatel... ...y, T.E. Nurse Practitioner
Yaidelyn Alonso SLS1125: Matos 4/20/12 Nurses: ââ¬Å"Caring Today For A Healthier Tomorrowâ⬠Growing up in a house hold of medical personnel, such as my mother and my aunt and other close relatives has really inspired me to become a Nurse Practitioner, but most of all my inspiration has come due to the death of my father. I want to help patients who may have false hope, who may think that thereââ¬â¢s nothing anyone can do, I want to give patients hope, and I will devote my life to make a difference in the medical field.Although it wonââ¬â¢t be easy, I know there will be obstacles I have to overcome, I think anything is possible if you persevere and if you commit yourself to do something that you love. At the end of the day you made at least one personââ¬â¢s life more enjoyable and filled them with hope, thatââ¬â¢s what Iââ¬â¢ll be thinking every night before I lay my head on my pillow. A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced training in diagnosin g and treating illnesses. Nurse Practitioners prescribe medication which usually RNââ¬â¢s cannot do, as well as treat illnesses, and administer physical exams. The difference between an NP and a physician is that they focus on prevention, wellness and education. To be more specific Nurse Practitioners may specialize in either Neonatal Care with new born and babyââ¬â¢s or Geriatric Health, Adult Health, Oncology, Family Health and Psychiatric/Mental Health. Personally I love trauma centers and the Emergency Room, Iââ¬â¢m quick on my feet and I do not like standing around, I like a job that challenges me and keeps me occupied. As a Nurse Practitioner you can sub-specialize in different areas and lately Iââ¬â¢ve been very interested in Oncology. To be very brief my father passed away due to cancer in his liver, I want to help and provide my utmost help to those with cancer like his, I want to make someoneââ¬â¢s day a little brighter no matter how sick they really feel. I d onââ¬â¢t just want to be a healthcare personnel I want to be the difference in someoneââ¬â¢s life, I want patients to have faith in me because I wonââ¬â¢t fail to care to there every need.In order to become an NP thereââ¬â¢s certain qualifications you need to abide by and of course you first must finish you AA and your bachelors in Registered Nursing. As a current student in Miami Dade College Iââ¬â¢ve researched and spoke with counselors that have guided me into the classes I must take to even get into the nursing program. Such as the basics chemistry and human growth and development, as well as Anatomy 1 and Anatomy 2, itââ¬â¢s not just taking the classes but about passing them with extraordinary grades and graduate with your AA and a really good GPA.After graduating with my AA I plan to transfer to FIU and further my studies, they have a great Nursing program, as soon as I graduate with my bachelors degree I will continue to get my masters and broaden my knowled ge in my studies. To be a nurse practitioner, you need to have a graduate degree, such as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The current minimum education needed to work as a Nurse Practitioner is a MSN degree, which takes 3-4 years to complete, depending on your specialty. Many colleges and universities prefer you have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) for entry into this graduate program, while other schools allow a bachelor's degree in another field if you are a registered nurse. In further detail In order to become an oncology nurse specialist, I will need to learn specific cancer care skills through coursework, clinical practice or continuing education. After gaining enough knowledge and on-the-job experience, I then can take an exam to become an Oncology Certified Nurse. To become an oncology nurse practitioner, I will also need to complete aà Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, typically obtained through a 2-year program of g raduate study. As an oncology nurse practitioner, I will need at least 500 hours of supervised clinical practice in oncology to be eligible to take the certification examination to become an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP). Certification is required in many states such as Florida. As with allà nursing careers, the demand for oncology nurses practitioner is expected to increase significantly over the next ten years. This is especially true because the vast majority of cancers are diagnosed in people over 55, making oncology nurses critically necessary! The median expected salary for a typicalà Nurse Practitionerà in theà United Statesà isà $90,531. Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, It requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God's spirit? Bra Boys And Belonging Essay
ââ¬Å"Belonging is not simply about the well-being of an individual. Belonging allows humans to overcome great obstacles and moments of adversityâ⬠. Every human being possesses the urgent need to belong, to gain the strength of others and to fit into society. It is in our basic nature, our history supporting the human will to belong, as tribes were formed, urban environments assembled and modern societies bringing individuals into a group as one. A sense of belonging gives us the strength to move forward, the mental and physical support of others and allows us to feel accepted. Sunny Abbertonââ¬â¢s documentary Bra Boys depicts the impact of belonging along with the obstacles his family and friends faced. A film conveying the struggles within the Maroubra area in the 80s/90s, that allows us to experience the connections made within the Bra Boys ââ¬Å"surf gangâ⬠and the challenges that they are faced with. The Bra Boys demonstrate that a sense of belonging can in fact impact us to overcome great challenges, and that no matter how dire your situation, there will always be somewhere for you to belong. Humans are faced with tests throughout their lives, some more fortunate than others. In the Maroubra community it seemed most of the kids had grown up in uncomfortable situations, most of the Bra Boys parents being drug users, alcoholics, or violent. The Maroubra adolescent community seemed to have a dark lure hanging over it, violence and hardship following those who tried to belong. Gangs formed as a result and the streets became dangerous at night. ââ¬Å"Growing up we had a lot of crazy things happen like guns held to our heads, chased down the street with people shooting at us, all sorts of things, but its good it turned us into what we areâ⬠admits Koby Abberton. One Bra Boys explains how he walked around the streets with a bat down his pants because you always had to be prepared for the worst when you were walking at night by your self. It was dangerous events like these that made Maââ¬â¢s seem so safe, like nothing could ever hurt them there. Ma was the Abberton boysââ¬â¢ grandmother, a gentle and generous woman who opened her arms and home to all the young and struggling children associated with the Abberton boys. Most of these boys came from broken families, somewhere theyà couldnââ¬â¢t really call home. Ma provided them with a place that was the next best thing to a home, a family of friends, somewhere that would bring the boys together into a brotherhood. They soon formed a group called ââ¬ËMaââ¬â¢s hell teamââ¬â¢ which was the beginning of it all, the beginning of the Bra Boys. Connections with people, places and the larger world can provoke a sense of belonging within ourselves, influencing where we search for meaning in our lives, and ultimately, where we belong. The Bra Boys forge connections amongst themselves by exploring each otherââ¬â¢s passions and loyalty. It is ultimately the surfing community/beach life that brings the boys together. The beginning of the documentary presents the surfing culture, diving directly into the heart of these boyââ¬â¢s lives. The viewer is presented with live footage, magazine cover pages and newspaper articles to express the success and enjoyment the Bra Boys share towards the sport. Another scene featuring cross cutting strings together shots of the Bra Boyââ¬â¢s handshake, celebrating their literal connections to one another. The Bra Boys are all blessed with a passion of surfing, somewhere they could escape together, and without that place to free their minds and have fun sharing a hobby together, they may not have formed such sturdy bonds as they possess today. The connections we make determine how we grow and develop. Along with be being connected, acceptance has a large impact on our lives and wellbeing. Being a Bra Boy comes with responsibility, one being to accept your brothers and be there for them no matter what. Acceptance allows us to gain confidence in our lives. Without the fulfillment of fitting in human beings tend to grow lonely and feel as though they donââ¬â¢t belong. With that sense of approval, we can acknowledge ourselves and achieve more. Bra Boys is a documentary which greatly highlights the impact of being accepted within a certain community. Spending their days surfing and hanging out with friends, the bra boys allow us to appreciate the greater prospects of belonging. Koby Abberton, main Bra Boy, describes to the viewer how important their ââ¬Ëgangââ¬â¢ is: ââ¬Å"if one of the boys calls, no matter what youââ¬â¢re doing you comeâ⬠. This depicts to us how strong and important their brotherhood is. The song ââ¬Å"My Brothers Keeperâ⬠featured in the film, written by Jamie Holt, backs up a bond of brothers such as the Bra Boys. ââ¬Å"My brothers, we are inà intertwinedâ⬠¦. these ties shall bind usâ⬠is sung to describe the acceptance of one another and words how their ââ¬Ëgangââ¬â¢ is literally bound to one another. ââ¬Å"My Brothers Keeperâ⬠is also symbolized as tattoos across various Bra Boys chests. Bra Boys shows a great example of how important acceptance is in our lives and the pride it can bring to us. The Bra Boys demonstrate that that their group also accepts many multi-cultured or religious Australians. Cultural acceptance can be a huge issue within our society today. Cultures and religions can shape humans into what they believe to be their better self. There are many issues revolved around religions clashing or which god should be worshipped. No matter what you believe in or put your faith in we are all human beings and should find the strength to accept each other for who we are. Towards the end of the documentary an issue is displayed for the viewer, on such as the Cronulla race riots, brings to our attention a so-called ââ¬Å"warâ⬠between Anglo Australians and Lebanese Australians. ââ¬Å"One of the things ma taught us was to not judge people by how much money they had, or their skin colour, but by what type of person they were, perhaps it was maââ¬â¢s wisdom that would prepare us for yet another dramatic turn in our beach communityâ⬠say Sunny Abberton. Footage, images, narration and Police radio communication depict the violence that occurred. We are shown how the aggressive behavior in Cronulla makes its way to Maroubra, and how the Bra Boys gather to protect their community. After the attacks the Bra Boys decide to broker a peace deal between the warring factions. We are shown a 9 News interview where Sunny Abberton states ââ¬Å"Maroubraââ¬â¢s had a very good relationship with the local Lebanese community here for around 10 years, weââ¬â¢re calling for calm on the beachesâ⬠. The Bra Boys wanted the ethnic community to feel accepted and wanted them to know that they did in fact belong at Maroubra beach, which is one of the most multicultural areas in Australia. The Bra Boys itself is filled with a number of different racial members, their powerful concept of belonging has transcended racial hatred. Bra Boys is a powerful documentary portraying many concepts of belonging. It shows us an authentic reality of how brutal life can be and that a group as strong as theirs can help to overcome such issues. No matter what theyà faced, they had each other. They showed us how important a powerful bond is, and the positive impact a sense of belonging can make. Some of the Bra Boys say the surf saved them, some say Ma did, but ultimately, they saved each other.

French English True Cognates Starting With R One of the great things about learning French or English is that many words have the same roots in the Romance languages and English. The 1,700 words are spelled (although not pronounced) identically in French and English and are true or semi-true cognates. Before you start memorizing them, please read some important notes about these cognates. The Fight For Freedom essays
The Fight For Freedom essays Throughout American history people have fought for causes in which they believe; one of these major causes was the emancipation of all black slaves within the United States. During the mid 1800s two of the greatest abolitionists emerged; Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. Both of these men lived during the same time period and grew up in hard conditions. However, both of these men overcame their hardships through the strength of their morals and became successful abolitionists. Although different in background and beliefs, William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass were two of the key abolitionists of the mid 1800s William Lloyd Garrison was a man who grew up under the care of only his mother, after his father left them early on in Williams life. Through all of the time spent with his mother, Garrison inherited many of her traits. (Lilley, 36) Williams early life in Massachusetts was unlike many other childrens because of his fathers heavy drinking, which caused his mother, Fanny, to work hard just to make sure that her children would not inherit any of their fathers weaknesses. (36) Unfortunately William had problems with money, which was scarce around the house; however, he finally found happiness working in a newspaper. This eventually helped lead him to create an abolitionist paper known as The Liberator. In this paper he expressed many of the views that he acquired from another great abolitionist Benjamin Lundy. (Lilley, 37) Garrison also had obtained many of his views against slavery listening to the British Parliaments debates on slavery in the West Indies (Lilley, 37). He was so inten t on getting is point across that in the very first printing of the Liberator he said: I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. . . . I am in earnest I will not equivocate I will not excuse I will not retreat a single inch AND I WILL BE HEA...
