What to Expect on College Move-In Day
The excitement on a college campus during move-in day is palpable. New students are moving in, parents are trying to figure out how to help, and there are usually just enough student orientation leaders and staff members to create the perfect mixture of confusion and assistance. How can you keep yourself on track? Know the Schedule and Stick to It If youre moving into a campus residence hall room, you most likely have been assigned a very specific time for unloading your items. Make sure to stick with this schedule. Not only will things be easier for you during your time to unload, but they will also be easier for you for the rest of the day. Move-in day is usually crammed full of events, meetings, and to-dos, so sticking to your assigned move-in time is of high importance.à Every minute of your move-in day is scheduled for a reason: there is a lot to cover and all of it is important. Go to every event youre assigned to, be there on time, and take notes. Chances are your brain will be overloaded by the time the day is over and those notes will come in handy later. Expect to Be Separated from Your Parents At some point during move-in day, you actually will have to be separated from your parents. Often, however, this will happen before they officially leave campus. Your parents may have a special schedule to go to that has separate events from yours. Expect this to happen and, if need be, brace your parents for it. Try Not to Be Alone Its no secret that the plan for the day is to keep you from being alone. Why? Well, just imagine what move-in day would be like without all of those scheduled events. Students would be kind ofà lost, unsure of where to go, and would probably end up just hanging out in their new roomsââ¬ânot the best way to meet a lot of people and get to know the school. So, even if you think the event after dinner sounds totally lame, go. You may not want to go, but do you want to miss out on what everyone else is doing? Keep in mind that the first few days of orientation are often when a lot of students meet each other, so its critical to get out of your comfort zone and join the crowdââ¬âyou dont want to miss out on this vital opportunity to start making new friends. Get to Know Your Roommate There may be a lot going on, but spending a little time getting to know your roommateââ¬âand setting up some ground rulesââ¬âis also super important. You dont have to be besties with your roommate, but you should at least get to know each other a little bit on move-in day and during the rest of the orientation. Getà Some Sleep! Chances are, move-in dayââ¬âand the rest of orientationââ¬âwill be one of the busiest times of your college life, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt take care of yourself a little, too. True, you will probably be up super late talking with people, reading all the material you were given, and just enjoying yourself, but remember that its also important to get at least a little sleep so you can stay positive, healthy, and energetic overà the next few days. Know That Its OK to Feel Sad Youre in college now! Your parents have left, the day is over, and youre finally all settled down in your new bed. Some students feel overwhelmingly happy, some feel overwhelmingly sad and scared, and some students feel all of these things at the same time! Be patient with yourself and know that you are making a humongous life adjustment and that all of your emotions are totally normal. You worked hard to get where you are and, while it may be scary, it can still be fantastic at the same time. Congratulate yourself on a job well done, let yourself be sad when you need to, and get ready to start your new college lifeââ¬âafter a good nights sleep, of course.

Internal Environment Analysis of BHP Billiton Internal analysis of the environment involves analyzing factors, events, requirements and entities within an organization that influences its performance. In most organizations, the factors that form part of their internal environment include; the leadership style, traditions and mission of the organization. From the internal environment analysis of BHP Billiton, the following factors and their influence on the organization were analyzed (Kemp, 2010, p.123). Resources A resource refers to any element that is productive and its aim is to support an activity or means by which a useful and desired outcome is achieved. There are for types of resources and these are; financial resources, human resources, material resources and the non-material resources such as information.BHP Billiton is an organization that deals with the extraction and production of mineral commodities, petroleum, and gas. An example of the mineral commodities includes copper and iron core. BHP Billiton is a big organization and has several mineral resources in different countries. These mineral resources are examples of the organizations material resources and they are assets which are very important to the organization since, without them, there would be no mineral to extract and produce. The organizations employees and workers constitute the human resources. These too are important in improving the performance of the organization. Financial resources include the capital the organ ization has that would support its projects. All the resources are very important since they have an impact on the performance of an organization and thus its success (Glinsky, Hansen, 2006, p.42). The capabilities of BHP Billiton The capability of BHP Billiton is measured by the quantity of production it makes. High production means high capability while law production means law capability. BHP Billitons capability has been majorly influenced by the available mineral resources, how they extract, produce and transport minerals and the policies they have put in place for their employees. From BHP Billitons production capacity, it is quite evident that its capability has been positively influenced by listed factors above (Painterà Morland, 2006, p.231). Core competencies of BHP Billiton Competence refers to the ability, commitments, knowledge and skills that enable an organization to its work in an effective and successful way. This can because of high knowledge about it or being very skillful at it. The following are the core competencies of BHP Billiton that has led to its success; (i) its numerous mineral resources. (ii) the remuneration policies put in place (iii) the strategies put in place to pursue the core strategy and (iv) the employee policies put in place to manage the employees activities (Mallin, 2011, p.78). VRIO(N) VRIO is a tool used analyzing the resources of an organization. It is an acronym of four letters and these letters are; value, rarity (rareness), imitability and organization. Value is used to assess how expensive a resource can be and how easily it can be obtained through the market for example by buying or renting. Rarity is used to analyze how rare a resource can be. Imitability is used to analyze how hard it is to imitate a resource. Organization is used to analyze any resource whose existence is supported by the arrangements of an organization. All these four steps make up the VRIO a technique for analysis. In the analysis of BHP Billiton using the VRIO technique, the material resources were analyzed. The major material resources of this organization are the mineral resources. Some mineral resources have value, some have value but are rare and those that are rare are either hard or easy to imitate. In line with the organizations competitive advantage, the organization is to choo se those resources that benefit them and leave out those that do not benefit them. BHP Billiton value of chain Value of chain is a series of activities that leads to the development of an organizations value at every step. The value of chain is used to analyze the activities of an organization and later come up with a concept that separates meaningful activities from those that are meaningless. Meaningful activities usually allow the organization to acquire a competitive advantage. A value of chain constitutes; logistics, operations, marketing and sales, and service. A good example of value of chain of the BHP Billiton is creation of the four business units from the separation of assets and their operations. This ensured that the decisions made remained as close to the business as possible. Thus limitations and challenges could be easily identified and tackled. After creating the business units, group functions were made to support the businesses and enable them operate under set accountabilities authorized by the Group Management Committee (GMC). Marketing strategies were also put in place t hat ensured; secured sales of product, realization of the worth of the product, good supply of chain from the resources to the market, assistance in decision-making through market insights and minimization of the production cost (Mallin, 2011, p.112). BHP Billiton culture Culture refers to the ways created and developed by an organization to help it tackle the problems and challenges it faces. These problems normally come about during the interactions of the organizations members, either among themselves or their surroundings. The culture of an organization usually determines what it is that the members should and what they should not do. A good culture ensures a good environment in which the members can work in. BHP Billitons members are mainly employees and contractors. The culture of BHP Billiton puts the employees and contractors in an environment where they all have common goals and values. It also provides directions on how the business is to be operated. The major aims of BHP Billitons culture include, building diversity, this is a case where the members appreciate each other and also to provide opportunities where the members can develop their skills. The culture of an organization usually influences its performance and thus it should be highl y considered if any organization wants to succeed. Major strategic issues for the organization In line with the strategy of BHP Billiton, which is to own and operates large, long-life, low-cost, expandable, upstream assets diversified by commodity, geography, and market, the following strategies have been put in place (Jenkins, 2004, p.178). BHP Billiton business model This business model comprises of four parts, these are; (i) exploration and evaluation, (ii) development, (iii) extraction, processing and transportation and (iv) marketing and logistics. Exploration and evaluation involves discovering natural resources through Brownfield and Greenfield exploration. The evaluation of the results of the Brownfield and Greenfield exploration, are used to identify future growth projects consistent with the organization strategy. Development involves creating and evaluating projects. The development and expansion of projects is very important for BHP Billiton. In the development of project, a project can only progress through after it has been approved both internally and externally. These approvals are very important since they would adequately determine which project is fit to have the capital within BHP Billiton for its development (Kemp, 2010, p.96). The main issue in extraction, processing and transportation is to safely operate all the organizations assets at a capacity. BHP Billitons marketing organization duties are; growing the view of markets and the organizations future planning, help the business to raise the value of upstream resources, selling the products and buying raw materials and to manage the price risk. Corporate planning This entails a review of the organizations strategy against the factors of the external environment. Corporate planning is meant to widen the organizations opportunities and at all cost prevent those threats posed to it. Corporate planning is usually done by the core principles of the organization; these are the board and the GMC. BHP Billitons corporate planning has a framework that consist of three issues which are; board strategic planning, business directional plans and strategy reviews and business delivery appraisals. The corporate planning of the organization is the foundation of its performances, thus a good corporate plan would ensure that the organizations accomplishes its strategy. Strategic priorities These are strategies that are prioritized by the company to help in achieving the common strategy. Some of these strategies include; (i) ensuring that the BHP Billitons employees are safe and protected during the operations. This also includes ensuring that their health status is good. The wellbeing of the employees is one of the major key things to success of the organization, thus getting rid of fatal incidents is and will always be the organizations focus.(ii) support sustainable development of the host community. This is a strategy by the organization to be a valued partner by the host community. The ways through which the communities gain from the organization include; employment opportunities, taxes, economic development and development of infrastructure leading urbanization. (iii) strategic approach to climate change. The three ways the organization has for addressing climate change includes; mitigation, adaptation and low emission technology. Mineral extraction has a major ef fect on climate change thus taking a stand to address a climate change is very important for the organization. Conclusion From the environmental analysis of BHP Billiton, the following findings were made; Every existing organization has its resources and it is the role of the organization to ensure for it be successful, these resources have to be assets to the organization and not a liability. The culture of an organization is an internal environment element that influences the organizations performances. The culture affects how the employees and workers perform their duties which in turn affects the organizations overall performance. Key performance indicators are ways of measuring a an organizations success thus their analysis is very important Most organizations always have strategies that help them widen the opportunities brought by the environmental elements and also strategies that help them avoid risk posed by some of those factors. Culture and Care Value Base free essay sample
In this assignment I am going to examine and explain my own personal values and principles influence my own work in professional practice. I will compare my principles and values with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council codes of practice and the Care Value Base. The NISCC and the Care Value Base have many similar codes of practice which all health and social care practitioners should adhere by and work with. The values I feel that are relevant within my experience of healthcare and within my current placement are confidentiality, dignity and respect, effective communication, anti-discriminatory practice and culture and beliefs. In researching NISCC codes of practice and the Care Value Base, I have found that their values are also similar to my own values within my care practice. The first value I am going to discuss is confidentiality. According to the Care Value Base maintaining confidentiality of information is an important part of caring. Any information clients give is private and confidential. Individuals need to be aware of what they say to other carers and clients and also who have access to client files. Previously undergoing work experience in the stroke ward I found that all patientsââ¬â¢ medical information is on a clipboard on the front of their bed, anyone could read this information, I feel the patientââ¬â¢s confidentiality is being breached. During my work placement at Ceara School, I observed that each pupil has individual care folders within school; these are kept in a secure filling cabinet and only the members of staff who are looking after a particular pupil is allowed access, I feel this is very good practice to uphold confidentiality. Within my placement I feel my values would be similar to the Care Value base, if a service user informed me of private information I would keep it to myself to build trust and confidence unless the individual or others were at harm. The second value that I feel is most important and relevant to my experience and work placement is effective communication. According to NISCC, one of their codes of practice is to communication in an appropriate, open, accurate and straightforward way. Within my work placement you have to have recognition and respect of the pupilââ¬â¢s opinions and ideas so they gain confidence within you and be more comfortable to talk. You also have to talk respectfully and use a lot of humor and creativity to keep them interested. On a regular basis there are group conversations and also one to one conversations, simple language is used that is easily understood and additionally open questions are applied to develop the conversation. With having previous work experience in Craigavon Area Hospital I have learnt the importance of communication. Many doctors used jargonistic terms, which can be very hard for patients to understand, I consider this to be ineffective communication. I feel my values are comparable to those of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council. I think that my value of communication within my work placement will come across positively. While in placement I make the speaker feel heard and understood, I make sure to create an environment where pupils feel safe to express ideas opinions and feelings. I keep suitable eye contact and show interest in what is being said and sure my posture is open and inviting. The Care Value Base deems that it is important to acknowledge an individuals personal beliefs and identity. The NISCC feel that respective diversity and different cultures and values are very significant and can have extensive affects on a persons care. I went to an integrated secondary school with many cultures and religions. I took part in a multi-cultural day in school, I got to see other communities and cultures and what they believed in, this widened my views and changed my opinions of different religions. While in Craigavon Area Hospital completing work experience I learned that meals and meal times were very important in some religions and culture. Some individuals were vegetarian; I had to be very respectable of their culture and identity. They were supplied with a different menu with different foods that they could choose this promotes the right of choice and independence. Before my work placement commenced I hoped that the employees and pupils had the same value as myself in consideration of different cultures and are open to express their beliefs and identity and be proud of who they are. My next value is extremely important in my care practice and that is upheld by NISCC and the Care Value Base is anti-discriminatory practice. Anti-discriminatory practice is action to prevent discrimination against people on the grounds of race, class, gender and disability. There are many pieces of legislation that are in place to protect individuals from discrimination including the Disability Act 1995, Human Rights Act, Equality Act 2010 and the Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995. In my work placement I will work in an anti-discriminatory way, I will not discriminate or judge the service users on their gender, race, class or disability. I believe everyone is different and we all have rights set in place to prevent us from being discriminated against. While undertaking work experience in Craigavon Area Hospital, disabled individuals were protected from discriminatory practice, there were lifts and ramps so all wheel chairs could access the building. There were wide and automatic doors so wheel chairs could get through them with no difficulty, although I feel this is very good practice there was also bad practice within the hospital. I consider individuals with different religions and languages were discriminated against. There were no interpreters for different languages therefore the patients didnââ¬â¢t know what had happened or what was about to happen. I feel my values hinder those of the Care Value Base and I imagine my values will come across positively within my work placement. I feel my personal culture and experience has influenced me in many different ways in supporting users of services and others in health and social care settings. My parents have taught me from a young age to say please and thank you and to be respectful to others. I have grown up knowing these simple values and therefore it has influenced me to show dignity and respect to all service users. Although I am of a Catholic background and practice the Catholic faith, I went to an integrated primary school and secondary school with many different religions and cultures. I now have an understanding of other cultures within health and socials care settings and I am able to accept other religions and their beliefs. I believe this have had a positive influence on my personal culture and experience. When I was in primary school, I met my best friend, he was homosexual. My parents were quite weary of this as they didnââ¬â¢t like the way he dressed and acted. They came to the terms of his sexual orientation and accepted him; because I have had the privilege of meeting him it has allowed me to open my eyes to all sexual ordinations. When working and supporting users of health and social care service I wouldnââ¬â¢t mind what sexual ordination the service user was, I would not discriminate against them. I would promote and uphold my values to protect them from harm. From experience I know many people have been discriminated on because of their gender. Some individuals will not be chosen for a particular job because they are male/female. Service users are also judged on their sexual ordinations, recently in the news according to Poots, Northern Irelands Health Minister he said that all gay men are not allowed to give blood. I feel this sexual ordination is being discriminated against, it is very bad practice and defeats the purpose of legislation created to protect individuals from this happening. I have grown up knowing that they are bad from family, friends and the media. This may affect and hinder my work but as I am now aware of this negative point I need to work on this barrier. I can not make an assumption until I work and understand them, until then, I will try not to judge this group. New developments and changes to personal values can have a major impact on working in the Health and Social Care sector. Firstly a new development of mine is starting a new course; I have met new people and got to know them. Working in different practices can impact work in a care setting, partnership can be developed and new skills can be gained. I have started a new placement in Ceara School, I am very excited to see if it is the right area of health and social care I want to do further studying in. I feel this experience can be very education and rewarding. This experience will help me in my future and will give me a good start. I can now see that it is the first time I have looking at my values thoroughly and reflected on them, I will challenge my values to become a better professional. I feel guest speakers were a new development of mine, they give me an insight into their organisation, and they also give me information on how I could get work experience. New developments and changes to my personal values can benefit the service user. I could reflect more in action rather than later, use communication more effectively and user my initiative in different situations. To conclude I believe that personal values is very significant in influencing my own work in the health and social care sector. I have found that my values are similar to the values of the Care Value Base and the Northern Ireland Social Care Council. I have found that there is legislation to protect individuals from unconfidentiality and anti-discriminatory practice also to promote dignity and respect, effective communication and culture and beliefs. I have also explored my new developments and what changes I could make to my personal values to create more effective and efficient care.
